New anti-fog equipment in Girona Airport

The AENA, Aeropuertos Españoles y Navegación Aérea (the company managing Spain´s main airports) approved the installation of the ILS (Instrumental Landing System) in Gerona, allowing takeoffs and landings in situations of fog and low visibility.

The AENA, Aeropuertos Españoles y Navegación Aérea (the company managing Spain´s main airports) approved the installation of the ILS (Instrumental Landing System) in Gerona, allowing takeoffs and landings in situations of fog and low visibility.

The project, a “crowning achievement” for Gerona airport according to Eduardo Cerezo, its director, will last 10 months and involves a 12.3 million Euros investment.

The landing system ILS Category II-III device delivers radio signals transmitting information to the aircraft reliably. It enables landing with a visibility of only 50 meters distance while security was formerly 550 meters.

The ILS is a notable upgrade that will reduce the number of cancellation or diversion of flights due to poor visibility, said AENA´s vice director, Enrique Gonzalez.

The device will avoid nightmare scenarios, such as late 2006, when 3600 passengers were stranded ashore due to cancellations caused by fog, and tens of planes were diverted to Perpignan airport to land.

The installation and works for the new system involves the replacement of existing tracking systems devices, installation of new beacons, visual aids and quick exit signage. Another important development in security matter is the construction of an efficient drainage in the runway which avoids water stagnation caused by heavy rains.

Pilots will also receive special training to land and take off without incident.

Girona-Costa Brava airport will be the eighth Spanish airport equipped with such an advanced technology with the Prat (Barcelona), Barajas (Madrid), Santiago de Compostela, Palma de Mallorca, Asturias, Vigo and Sevilla.
